CIGE 2008
Collectors, galleries and art lovers from all over the world enjoyed the five-day gala of contemporary art in 2008 China International Gallery Exposition (CIGE 2008), which came to a perfect ending on April 28, 2008. 80 galleries selected from over 300 applicants represented the panorama from masterpieces to cutting edge art. According to statistics, the sale volume reached 40 million U.S. dollars within five days, increased 40 percent compared to 2007, together with a huge attendance of 40,000 visitors. This year CIGE played as a significant platform for domestic galleries to be international and guided the overseas galleries meet the domestic art market. Praised by the participating galleries and collectors, CIGE 2008 was more than an art fair, it also built the bridge between China and Asian, the east and the west.

Top Galleries Show
As the main part of the fair, 80 galleries from all over the world gathered in both 1st and 2nd floors of China World Trade Center Exhibition Hall, including established galleries from advanced art market as U.S, Germany and emerging galleries from rising art regions as Russia, Turkey, Israel and Southeastern Asia.

After fully consideration and investigation, CIGE 2008 was focusing on emerging art areas, aimed to help collectors, journalists, gallerists to have deeper understanding on these "new areas and new artists".

It was the first time for CIGE 2008 to program the diversity of Asia and the future of the art market as the current phenomenon. The proportion of galleries who from outside mainland China is 80%, which has increased 20% in comparison with last edition; the scale of Asian galleries is 70% which showed CIGE was based on the theme of Asian concept. Special project MAPPING ASIA, the exhibition of 33 Young Asian Artists Solo Shows was popular among the collectors and media reporters. While embodying the developing international trend of the contemporary art, CIGE paid much attention to and timely reflected the integrating trend of the extraordinary Asian tradition and modern ideas. These artists and their outstanding artworks represented the future trend and diversity of contemporary art and boundless artistic achievements. It is significant to continuously focus on these works because they show a picture of flourishing development of Asian contemporary art to the audiences, and provide an extremely valuable references and advices to the collectors around the world.

The Gala of Collectors
CIGE 2008 provided ideal environment for appreciating arts and exclusive service to its VIP guests. A great amount of collectors from Japan, Korea, Indonesia and Europe attended the fair, the separate VIP entrances, VIP Lounge guaranteed the privacy and convenience for these guests. The Cocktail Reception on Preview day is a comfortable venue for communication. Meanwhile, the VIP Banquet and Charity Auction at the same day in China World Hotel had the Celebrities from all the fields, which created an unforgettable nights for guests. The carefully curated gallery area and special project provided collectors with precisely introduction, so that the collectors can choose their favorites easily and comfortably. During the exhibition, collectors brought their favorites with their own special judgment and appreciation. Some galleries sold all their work during the first two days, and the total sales in CIGE 2008 achieved 40 million US Dollars, which demonstrated CIGE's leading position in Asian contemporary art fairs.

The Academic Avant-Garde
CIGE has never only defined itself as a commercial exposition; however, it is always insisting on its academic theme. This edition not only inherit the successful tradition of the special project SUBLIMINALS, invited 6 non-profit art organizations from all over the world, but also curated another exhibition VIDEO LOOPS, exhibiting video artwork from various countries and regions, offering a chance for the communication among different cultural tradition. What's more, it brings up a new idea of TALKS: Art Biennials and Cities in Asia, actively exploring the influence on city by contemporary art, becoming an interactive platform for exploring contemporary art trend and social development.

Charity Event
It is the first time that CIGE brought the charity event in the fair's schedule. Together with the artists CIGE expected to return to the society which supports the booming art market. BE@RBRICK MEETS CHINESE CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS has received very warmly response from media promotion during the exhibition. And a number of collectors fiercely bided for the BE@RBRICK-based artworks at the VIP Banquet. cooperated with Poly Auction, the dinner raised a unforeseen amount of RMB 2,680,000, which will be donated to Smile Angel, the charity foundation founded by Faye Wang and Li Yapeng, to help cleft lip children.

Media Promotion
CIGE 2008 has achieved the whole conception for promotion. There are 35 booths for media exhibitors on the first floor, including ARTiT/Tokyo, ARTREVIEW/London, Flash Art/Italy and other influential international art magazines, newspapers and websites. Besides the promotion platform that constructed by more than 110 partner medias, the media coverage including all continents and attracted such public attention via the media partners'solid distribution and circulation. Reporter groups from Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, UK and other regions did interviews on participating artists and galleries, the separate Interview Room also encouraged interviews and TV screening. The 4-day continually on-line live report by ARTRON and IONLY completed the promotion successfully, with 200 newspapers and magazines, 15 televisions and 20 web medias together. The strong support from all kinds of media indicated the high international reputation of the fair and provide enormous public exposure for galleries and artists.


AUDI, as one of the world's leading automobile corporation, has established the associate sponsorship with CIGE 2008 and did great efforts on the international culture communication and the development of contemporary arts. The VIP lounge that designed and decorated by Boloni had supplied a comfortable and private space for collectors and VIP guests. Furthermore, Cognac and wines for cocktail reception, dinner and VIP lounge were sponsored by Martell, it is also the second times of Beauty Sky to give a hand in contemporary art, supplied fine black-tea for the VIP guests and CIGE committee.
